Westernport Indigenous Nursery

The CEC nursery has had a name change!

It is now the Westernport Indigenous Nursery.

The nursery is located on a newly developed site in Tynong.

This is a community nursery, and is run on a not-for-profit basis, and provides and educational experience to volunteers and students, who gain knowledge and work experience in the operations of an indigenous plant nursery.

The nursery is based on the ethical production of indigenous plants and focuses on local seed provenance. We aim to produce plant species with good genetic diversity. Orders are made up with a range of species for diversity based on plant communities within an area’s EVC (Ecological Vegetation Classes).

nursery2Seed is collected via professional, licensed seed collectors, cleaned, recorded and stored in the Nursery Seedbank and consists of collections from a wide range of species.

The seed is germinated then pricked out (potted).  Cuttings are also taken. We mainly produce forestry tube stock but also use Hyco cells.

Seed is collected, and plants are grown and provided to:

  • landholders who undertake Westernport Catchment Landcare projects,
  • private landholders who wish to order local provenance plants to undertake revegetation or offset works,
  • commercial ecological restoration businesses to ensure local provenance plants,
  • projects calling for direct seed applications, rather than tube stock or hyco cells,
  • local councils contracts
  • local environmental groups

nursery3A wide range of people are involved in the nursery production. Such as;

  • Cardinia Environment Coalition staff
  • Yanggai employees
  • Volunteers
  • Green corps
  • Work for the Dole
  • Students on work experience
